COLONEL'S KEPI OF CARABINIERS, model 1858, Second Empire. 27147

Of rather high shape, 8 cm in the front and 13.5 cm in the back, band composed of a wide silver galloon known as "cul de dé" adopted in the Imperial Guard from 1858, H 4 cm, topped with five flat tresses indicating the rank of colonel. Hat in sky blue cloth with three flat silver braids sewn on each side and at the back. Crown bordered with a flat silver braid and a Hungarian knot in its center made of two silver tresses, crown diameter 12 cm. At the front above the band is sewn a grenade on a sky blue background in silver threads, spangles, and sequins (H 3.5 cm, width 2.4 cm). Chin strap in black varnished leather bordered at the top and bottom with two small silver galloons; it is fastened to the band with two half-bell buttons in silver metal stamped with the crowned imperial eagle. Visor in black varnished leather, lined below with green waxed leather, leather piping folded over the outer edge.

Good condition, cloth with some stains, moth holes.

NOTE:
Kepi model 1858 "description of cavalry uniforms" remained in service until 1870 (alongside the police cap m.1860), and of the same model despite entry into the Guard in 1865.
