WEAPONS AND ARMOR, Volume 1 from the 12th to the 16th centuries.

WEAPONS AND ARMOR, Volume 1 from the 12th to the 16th centuries.

This work in French, in two volumes, presents weapons and armor from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. The first volume covers the first period, from the 6th to the 12th century; the second then covers the periods from the 13th to the 16th century. The author and Heimdal Editions have joined forces to treat a classic theme, but rarely concerned in recent years by French-language publications. These two volumes are the result of shared reflection, renewing certain theories about material culture, and drawing the best from archaeological and historical research in recent years. The book also benefits from high-quality photos, taken during studies or collaborations with institutions that preserve them, by illustrating rarely published objects. Using the expertise of colleagues and colleagues, the author has brought together contributions from the most recent research activities, the work is therefore also the reflection of a community of historians and researchers about weapons and armor. Richly illustrated with iconographies, but also sketches and drawings, the pages of the book benefit from magnificent photos of the most recent re-enactment troops. There we also find evidence of the activities of the artisans most involved in the experimental study of the methods of producing ancient weapons and armor, and the arts of the blacksmiths of the Middle Ages, which sometimes still remain enigmas to us. This work opens a new window on this knowledge and these ancient worlds.

The author
Nicolas P. Baptiste, born in 1980 in Tournai, intended firstly for the Fine Arts, then for ancient crafts, training in particular in armor forging techniques. Turning again to the human sciences, he continued his studies in history in France, and obtained a doctorate in medieval history while being in charge of the research funds and archives of the Château de Morges in Switzerland. His thesis, defended at the University of Savoy in Chambéry, focuses on the weapons, armor and armorers of princes and knights at the court of Savoy, between 1330 and 1530.
