This 2nd volume on French swords from the period 1830-1870 closes the chronological saga of French swords from 1814 to 1940 that Jean ONDRY wanted to present to the many international collectors of this theme. It uses a presentation and a methodology which satisfied them following the numerous testimonies received. Firstly, the previous regulatory sabers which continue to be used and secondly the new models adopted by the Minister of War or the "fancy" ones chosen by officers keen to distinguish themselves. The period 1830-1870 saw many military campaigns. This book gives the author the opportunity to particularly highlight the conquest of Algeria and the creation of the Army of Africa which often used specific swords. They distinguished themselves in Crimea, Italy, China, Mexico and finally in mainland France. This, whatever the regime in place, thus moving from the rooster of Louis Philippe to the eagle of Napoleon III.
As before, the author relies on official documentation available from the Defense Historical Service of Châtellerault. He supplements it, when possible, with iconographic documents and period photos from his collection or private collections. These photos only represent soldiers whose saber can be identified without any dispute. This shows that the regulations are not particularly followed by the officers. Even more than in the first volume, the collector will be able to appreciate numerous photos of swords in excellent condition, from his collection or from the collections of friends, whose particularities will be highlighted by close-ups of the mounts or various markings and engravings. which single out certain models.
