WATERLOO 1815-2015 - EUROPE CHALLENGED - THE CHALLENGE TO EUROPE
Exhibition Catalog.
The Battle of Waterloo on June 18, 1815, marked the end of the Napoleonic Empire. It left a lasting impression on witnesses due to the determination of the fighters, the ferocity of the battles, and the concentration of forces on a small battlefield. The return of the Emperor to France hastened the conclusion of the Congress of Vienna, which ended a week before Napoleon's final defeat. Two visions of Europe collided.
This bicentenary provides an opportunity to showcase the collections held at the Royal Museum of the Army and Military History in Brussels. The project is divided into two main and complementary axes.
The first axis explores war tourism by presenting a portion of the collection of English hussar sergeant-major Cotton, a former soldier in the Duke of Wellington's army and a guide on the battlefield site where he once resided. The second part of the project takes place in the Arcades of the Cinquantenaire, a major tourist and symbolic site of the Royal Museum of the Army and Military History.
"Waterloo 1815-2015. The Challenge to Europe" aims to encompass, as the museum's permanent exhibition does, the wide range of conflicts that strained European relations, particularly among the neighboring states of present-day Belgium. Thanks to the richness of its collections, the Royal Museum of the Army and Military History is able to display a unique variety of remarkable uniforms.
Moreover, through a magnifying lens, this exhibition focuses on the battlefield, the artists' perception of it, what it was and has become, and the experiences of Belgium's citizens who were present in 1815, those men who tragically found themselves fighting on opposing sides.
The museum institution exists in relation to its heritage: far from being mere illustrations of historical discourse, the objects contribute to its construction. From relics frozen in rust to pristine uniforms, preserved as they were or intentionally transformed, these pieces bear the marks of those who used, kept, restored, and passed them on to the community. We hope this catalog will allow them to be properly appreciated.
