Valmy, Marengo, Austerlitz, Waterloo… Many of us have followed the prestigious saga of the soldiers from the year II to those of Napoleon.
All these heroic events have been the subject of a considerable number of works, memoirs, histories. However, it must be acknowledged that the daily life of the soldier is not well known. Some authors have given priority to battles and strategy, others have written memories after 10 or 20 years. The letter sent to parents, fiancée, friend, so simple and miserable, has the advantage of expressing the emotion of the moment, of conveying the thoughts, the joys, the sorrows felt.
This book, supported by over 400 selected letters, is therefore unprecedented. It tells the often pitiful story of men lost in the four corners of Europe. These letters, from which only the passages of interest have been extracted, allow us to grasp the daily reality, to understand the diverse feelings of a multitude of young men thrown into terrifying wars. These documents also reveal the psychology of the era and show us the differences between the soldier of the Revolution and that of the Empire.
The work is accompanied by a rich and important iconography, exclusively from original sources: vignettes, colored drawings that adorned certain letters. Various rare nominative illustrations are included, providing valuable information.
