FIREFIGHTER UNIFORMS FROM 1700 TO THE PRESENT DAY
The role of firefighters truly emerged at the beginning of the 18th century with the invention of the hand pump. The need to train skilled and available technicians led to the creation of Guard-Pumpers. In order to be immediately recognizable, they required a distinctive sign. The corporate medal was succeeded by headgear, first a cap and then a helmet, until a uniform made its appearance. The firefighter uniform is thus a relatively recent creation compared to those of other major state corps. The Napoleonic era saw the broad definition of the firefighters' uniform, but it wasn't until the late 19th century that each corps was equipped with a uniform, and it wasn't until the 1950s that it was standardized. Prior to this day, no study had presented and gathered in a single work all the headgear and uniforms worn by firefighters in military and civilian corps, from their origins to the latest technological advances. Intended for both enthusiasts of the institution's history and collectors, this work covers all aspects of the subject, with over 700 color photos, engravings, and some completely unpublished period photos.
