OFFICER'S HELMET OF A CUIRASSIER, MODEL 1874.
Helmet consisting of: a skull; a visor; a neck guard; a copper headband; two chin straps; a crest; a mane; a plume holder; a crest ornament; and an inner lining.
The skull, in chromed metal, shaped by the pendulum, planed by the hammer. Pierced at the top with five vent holes. The visor is inclined at 53 degrees below a horizontal plane passing through the junction of the visor and the skull. Edged with a 17mm wide gilded copper circle placed astride its edges and fixed at the ends by a rivet. Underside of the visor lined with green leather.
Neck guard consists of: a circular band on its flat side, welded under the posterior edge of the band it extends, featuring three gilded brass nails with half-spherical heads riveted on the inside; a second concave band, forming a groove, with rounded angles and welded inside, at the bottom of the first one. Like the visor, the neck guard is edged with a gilded copper trim, 17mm wide, set astride. Missing the leather lining the neck guard.
The back of the skull is marked with "BREVETÉ SGDG" and the manufacturer's hallmark.
The headband, in gilded copper, embossed with a flaming grenade encircled by laurel leaves, is attached to the skull. Its base rests on the visor and its ends are riveted to the skull in the part concealed by the chin strap rosette.
Each chin strap is made up of 9 copper ornamental scales, embossed in relief with laurel leaves, decreasing in width. These scales are fixed with flattened wire nails on a core of leather lined with black velvet. Missing the buckle. At the other end, there is a black varnished calf lining strap. The top scale of each chin strap is terminated by a rounded section embossed with a circular rosette depicting relief laurel leaves.
The skull is topped with a gilded copper crest consisting of two fins, a mask, and a covering. The fins, positioned vertically at a distance of 32mm in the front and 25mm in the rear, have the shape of a convex curvilinear triangle at the top and connect to the skull by a concave base forming a scalloped edge. This edge is secured to the skull by rounded drop-shaped copper screws that are stopped inside the helmet by square copper nuts. The fins are adorned with palmettes and a border fillet at their upper edge; the edge is decorated with water leaves, all embossed in relief. A tinplate plaque joins the upper edges of the fins, fixing their spacing. The mask, serving as the anterior junction of the two fins through a solder, is embossed with a relief head of Medusa. The covering, also embossed, represents the continuation of the hair of the head of Medusa with intertwined snakes. The crest ornament consists of a socket embossed with relief water leaves and a lens formed by two embossed shells. Fixed in front of the crest and supporting an aigrette made of a tuft of horsehair.
Black dyed horsehair mane, mounted on a nourished cowhide sole, in which the hair is assembled with tinned brass threads with a piece of sheepskin glued with strong glue to the assembly; the void left between the two rows of hair is filled with a braid starting from the top and following the curve of the crest until it meets the skull. The mane is attached to the crest with two copper screws and nuts.
A gilded copper plume holder, embossed, 35mm high, forming a socket with square sections, fixed obliquely.
Inner lining in glossy brown leather, cut with ten wolf teeth, each lined with a metal eyelet.
