“Cutting saber”! Immediately, the expression appeals to our imagination in its most colorful romantic version, the one that popular imagery has instilled in us through comics, literature and Hollywood chromos.
The blunt and murderous instrument that comes to us is recognizable among all by its inevitable domed black shell with a curved blade, it is inevitably brandished by heroes - good and bad - whether they are pirates or buccaneers, bandits or corsairs, in the service of king or their own purse! Certainly, historical reality will retain the din, blood and smoke from the picture, but will have to make a clean sweep of an infinity of exhilarating clichés that only archival research and archeology are able to combat. I therefore invite you to share my curiosity in this somewhat austere and little-exploited field which will allow you to understand the subject of this work with a renewed vision.
The history of the ship's sabre, often approximated, never accomplished, is offered here in a very complete chronological panorama based exclusively on archival sources crossed with the in-depth study of certified objects which have reached us and of which the best specimens are offered by 200 detailed photographs. The texts and ancient iconography are reproduced as well as technical plates of its details. So many qualities that classify this work among the reference works for both public and private collections.
