PADDED VEST FOR CUIRASS of the Cent-Garde Squadron of the Emperor's Military House, model 1856. Second Empire.
Comprising two parts, one fastened to the breastplate and the other to the backplate of the cuirass. Made of coarse ecru canvas with scarlet cloth framing, gold piping, and gold braid sewn along the outer edge.
Both parts are dated 1866 and marked with serial number 165; at the bottom, a very rarely encountered marking reads "No. 1" (in the book "HUNDRED GUARDS FOR AN EMPEROR," the authors identify this marking as indicating the size of the cuirass; however, cuirasses were all custom-made, moreover, we have handled several vests of different sizes, all marked 1; we think this number may possibly signify: OUTFIT NO. 1).
Leather-covered cloth straps are sewn around the perimeter of each element, with steel hooks for fastening the cuirass (only 10 of the original 28 hooks are present).
Very good condition, with some stains and a small tear.
Extremely rare vest.
