Hussar Officer's Saber, Directory - Consulate Period. 34684
Brass hilt. Single-branch guard, pommel with a long tail. Handle made of wood covered with black waxed leather, filigreed with copper. Slightly curved blade with hollow edges and a flat back, engraved with a Turk's head, foliage, and weapons trophies, blued and gilded. Length 76 cm, width at the hilt 4 cm, thickness 10 cm.
Black waxed leather scabbard, with three brass fittings decorated with lines, brass rings, and an asymmetrical iron chape.

Very good condition, blade repainted, later manufacture of the scabbard.
PROVENANCE:
Former collection of the Grenus family, Geneva military and magistrates, originally from Armentières near Lille, ennobled by Charles V in 1553. Jean-Ferdinand de Grenus (1752-1831) was a baron of the Holy Roman Empire.
