HISTORICAL CONTEXT:
John Richards was established at 54 Strand, London, between 1782 and 1808. He worked as a firearms manufacturer, specializing in pistols. The Strand was a significant thoroughfare in London, connecting the Westminster area to the City. Its location allowed a gunsmith to offer his products to a wealthy clientele, including officers, gentlemen, and shooting enthusiasts. A London commercial directory from 1818 still lists a "J. Richards," a manufacturer of rifles and pistols, at 55 Strand.
