HISTORICAL NOTES:
Guigon in Aix (often spelled GUIGON A AIX) refers to a significant dynasty of gunsmiths, gunners, and master armorers established in Aix-en-Provence in the 18th century, active during the reigns of Louis XV and Louis XVI, from around 1740 to 1785. Aix-en-Provence, then the political and judicial capital of Provence (seat of the Parliament), housed a wealthy aristocracy and a robe nobility very fond of ornamental hunting weapons and dueling or carriage pistols. The Guigon family was the most renowned armory in the city at that time. Stockel's work lists Joseph Guigon and his successor Guigon Son, both master gunsmiths in Aix.
The creations of the Guigon workshop are representative of the Provencal rococo style and French luxury armory of the second half of the 18th century.
The signature is mostly engraved or inlaid in silver on the lock plate and/or the top barrel flat: GUIGON A AIX.
