HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
Tasnière (often signed TASNIERE A BESANCON) was a master gunsmith from Franche-Comté based in Besançon in the 18th century, mainly during the reigns of Louis XV and Louis XVI, active circa 1740–1785. Besançon, which became the capital of Franche-Comté under Louis XIV, hosted a major military garrison, a parliament, and a demanding provincial nobility. This made it an active center for civilian gunsmiths and officer suppliers. Specialized antique weaponry catalogs (such as Støckel) document the presence of the Tasnière family in Besançon over two generations in the 18th century, producing both hunting firearms for civilians and firearms for officers.
