HISTORY:
Around 1770, the Brantôme maréchaussée brigade (often spelled Branthôme in ancient texts) was a territorial unit of judicial police and public security based in Brantôme (Périgord, present-day Dordogne). This period was marked by the extensive reorganization of the French Maréchaussée orchestrated under the reign of Louis XV by the Duke of Choiseul, in accordance with the ordinances of 1768 and 1769-1770.
The Brantôme brigade was part of the Maréchaussée Company of the Generalité of Bordeaux (or the Lieutenancy of Périgueux). It monitored the northern part of Périgord, ensuring security on major roadways (especially the Périgueux-Angoulême route), and maintaining order at markets and fairs in the Dronne Valley.
During the French Revolution, the law of February 16, 1791, transformed the French Maréchaussée into the National Gendarmerie. The Brantôme maréchaussée brigade thus became the Brantôme gendarmerie brigade, retaining its local anchoring role for the security of the Dronne Valley.
