FANTASY SABRE OF AN UNIDENTIFIED FRENCH COLONIAL TROOP, Former Monarchy, mid-18th century. Inventory number 34588
Brass hilt. Single-branch guard and simple knuckle-bow, of the cavalry model in use from 1680 to 1730, quillon. Anthropomorphic handle of African origin carved from buffalo horn and inlaid with bone and twisted brass wire, the base is wrapped in a copper braid; domed pommel decorated in relief with the monarchic fleur-de-lis. Strong blade typical of boarding weapons, half-curved with a 61 cm back and fuller; it is engraved with the usual symbols of a workshop from the Solingen manufacture. Leather scabbard stitched along the edge, which seems to have never had any fittings. A very similar model was made at the same time for certain units of the Piedmontese troops.
