HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
Despite its name, it does not necessarily imply it was made in Wallonia. The term "Wallonne" has predominantly become a French designation for a family of strong combat swords characterized by their robust blade and protective hilt.
Examples preserved in the Netherlands are dated to the second half of the 17th century, notably at the Museum De Lakenhal in Leiden. They already exhibit the distinctive configuration: entirely iron hilt, guard branch, two side branches, and openwork guard plates.
The blade manufacturing is also linked to the major metallurgical center of Solingen in the Holy Roman Empire. A specimen precisely attributed to the period 1650-1680 bears the inscription "SAHAGUM", a running wolf associated with Solingen, as well as a mark linked to Amsterdam.
It corresponds to the evolution of European cavalry armament after the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648).
It was under Louis XIV that this weapon gained particular importance in France.
French cavalry already used forms of strong swords in the 17th century, but the 1672 campaign against the United Provinces, during the Dutch War, marked a significant moment in the history of this weapon.
