"MILITARY RECORDS" OF THE FRENCH REPUBLIC AND THE FRENCH EMPIRE, COMPLETE COLLECTION OF THE 4 VOLUMES, YEAR X TO YEAR XIII (1802 to 1805). 34672-3

The National Library of France indicates that the representative series of the birth of the Empire consists of a set of four volumes for the years concerned in its catalog. It is particularly interesting because it is directly linked to the work of Adjudant-Commandant Antoine-Julien-Pierre Palasne de Champeaux.

Military State of Year X — 1802
One volume in-12, half-bound calf, gold titles, marbled edges, 778 pages.
Title: Military State of the French Republic, for the year ten
Responsibles: Adjudant Commandant Champeaux...
Publisher: Bureau de l'État-Militaire, Paris.
Foreword with original signature of Champeaux.
The year X is particularly appealing for bibliophiles because it still fully belongs to the universe of the Consular Republic. The title does not yet mention Empire, and the administrative vocabulary is that of the Republic's army, even though Bonaparte's personal power is already significantly strengthened.
The work is designed as a true consultation tool. It gathers the staffs, troops, officers, divisions, garrisons, and various information to identify the French military architecture.
The copy from year X is therefore a particularly interesting piece in a collection dedicated to the Consulate, as it captures the French army just before the rupture of the Peace of Amiens.
Year X corresponds to 1802, the year of the Peace of Amiens and the restoration of a period of relative peace in Europe.
It is, therefore, a snapshot of the army between the great revolutionary period and the future Grande Armée.
Some notable observations include:
- the structure of the demi-brigades;
- military staffs;
- general and senior officers;
- unit locations;
- military divisions;
- fortresses;
- different weaponry;
- information about officers;
- transformations inherited from the revolutionary armies.
Genealogical and regimental research indeed uses this work as a primary source: for example, the lists of officers of the 22nd demi-brigade for 1802 are explicitly drawn from pages 188-190 of the Military State of the French Republic for the year X.

Military State of Year XI — 1803
One volume in-12, blue binding, gold titles, marbled edges, 459 pages.
Title: Military State of the French Republic, for the year ten, "dedicated to the First Consul, according to his authorization."
Responsibles: Adjudant Commandant Champeaux.
Publisher: chez l'auteur / Imprimerie de l'État militaire, year XI Paris.
Foreword with facsimile signature of Champeaux.
Year XI marks a step in personalizing the publication around Champeaux and especially in his relationship with the consular authority. This is no longer simply an anonymous or collective military yearbook: Champeaux clearly becomes the authorial identity of the publication, placed under the symbolic authority of the First Consul.
In 1803, the Peace of Amiens has just ended, and France resumes war against Great Britain. This is precisely the moment when the French military apparatus begins to expand considerably.
Conscription is gradually strengthened: measures taken in years X and XI notably prepare for the increase in the necessary army personnel.
The Military State of the year XI shows the French army on the threshold of the great Napoleonic mobilization. By comparison with year X, it allows tracking changes in officer assignments, corps transformations, staff modifications, garrison changes, regimental structure evolution, and the military apparatus' growing strength.

Military State of Year XII — 1804
One volume in-12, half-bound calf, gold titles, marbled edges, 586 pages.
Title: Military State of the French Republic, for the twelfth year, "dedicated to the First Consul, according to his authorization."
Responsibles: Adjudant Commandant Champeaux.
Publisher: Paris, chez l'auteur, year XII.
Foreword with facsimile signature of Champeaux.
Bibliophile Description.
Year XII is probably one of the most interesting volumes to possess along with year XIII, as it sits precisely at the hinge between the Consular Republic and the Empire. The title still reads Military State of the French Republic, but the political context of 1804 completely transforms the document's scope.
The volume is also significant for the history of military publishing: Champeaux now directly publishes "chez l'auteur," at his address on Rue du Four-Saint-Germain.
An old copy listed in bibliophilic trade is described as for 12mo, with pagination divided into two sets of 96 and 212 pages, and half-bound basane binding on blue paper boards. This description is useful for appreciating the material forms preserved in the copies.
1804 is the pivotal year of the transition from First Consul Bonaparte to Emperor Napoleon I.
Nevertheless, the book still retains the republican appellation. It is precisely this disconnect that gives it exceptional historical interest.
The Military State of Year XII thus shows the French army just before its regime change, while the military organization that will give rise to the Grande Armée is already under construction.
It is also an important period for conscription: the draft is reinstated on 8 nivôse year XII (30 December 1803), and the law of 3 germinal year XII provides for 60,000 men from the year XIII class.

Military State of Year XIII — 1805
One volume in-12, red basane binding, gold titles, marbled edges, 692 pages.
Title: Military State of the French Empire, for the thirteenth year, "dedicated to H. M. the Emperor, according to his authorization."
Responsibles: Adjudant Commandant Champeaux.
Publisher: Paris, chez l'auteur; Leblanc, printer-publisher, year XIII.
Foreword with facsimile signature of Champeaux.
First Military State with a fundamental title change. The Republic has disappeared from the title. We now have: Military State of the French Empire. Champeaux is presented as an officer of the Legion of Honor, employed in the general staff of the sixth division.
This is probably the most emblematic volume of the four.
1805, the year of the formation of the Grande Armée and the campaign against the Third Coalition. It is, therefore, the document that allows us to look at the Napoleonic army as it enters its grand imperial phase.

France.
Consulate – First Empire.
Good condition, the Year X State with its binding detached.

PROVENANCE:
Formerly owned by Christian Ariès and then Michel Pétard.

NOTE:
The Historical Defense Service considers these Military States as collective sources that notably help identify officers, and recalls the succession of titles: Military State of France, then of the French Republic, then of the French Empire.
