STRONG SWORD OF THE ROYAL HOUSE CHEVAU-LÉGERS, vers 1750-1762, Reign of Louis XV. 34336
Strong hilt with a musketeer design in gilded brass. Guard with two main branches and two secondary branches forming a palmetto and two intertwined Cs. Oval-shaped pommel (height of guard branches 14.5 cm, height of pommel 5.5 cm). Bivalve hilt. Wooden grip entirely filigreed in silver. Silver braided ferrules. Originally a 90 cm blade, now measuring 87.5 cm on this piece, width at the base 2.9 cm, in a demi-espadon style, with faded engravings. Without scabbard.
Weight: 965 grams.
As Michel Pétard is considered the best specialist in the field, we borrow from his work "Des Sables et des Épées - Troupes à cheval de Louis XIV à l'Empire - tome I", pages 70 and 71, figure 47S, the entirety of his analysis of this item:
"As is most often the case in governmental guards, no documents inform us about the Chevau-Légers company, only objects can shed light on the subject. Strong hilt in gilded brass, closely identical to that adopted by the marshalcy around 1730-1740, but distinguished by a finely filigreed silver grip with ferrules stamped in a braid, and especially by the presence of a removable guard piece which saw two types of mounting - either by a tenon fitted into a mortise hollowed in the rib of the shell, or by a widened piece fastened to the escutcheon base. The 90 cm blade, in demi-espadon style, is engraved in large cursive script: "Chevaux-légers De la Gardes Du Roy" and below "Manufacture Royale Des armes blanches D'alsace". Without this information, we would not know the origin of this very beautiful item. As for dating, it remains vague due to the lack of reliable indicators. This strong sword was likely the rational compromise between a multi-branch combat saber and a service sword unfit for war."
