SHAKO OF THE 12th LIGHT INFANTRY REGIMENT, 1812 model, First Empire. 34226
Body made of 18.5 cm high black felt. Crown made of strong, waxy cow leather, with a diameter of 24.5 cm folded over the felt to a height of 3.5 cm. At the bottom of the felt, a plain cow leather chinstrap, 2 cm wide, is sewn on, with a brass buckle at the back and its brass buckle pin, buckle height 2.6 cm, width 2 cm. Under this buckle, a simple calf leather gusset is sewn in to facilitate the chinstrap's movement. A rounded visor made of glossy, sturdy cow leather is sewn at the front of the shako, 6.2 cm wide.
A stamped iron plate (or badge) attached to the front, representing a crowned imperial eagle holding the lightning bolt of Jupiter in its talons, set on a shield-shaped base with the number "12" in the center, bordered at the bottom by an oak branch and a laurel branch; the lateral ends of the shield are decorated with a lion's head, height 13.3 cm x 11.3 cm.
Tricolor painted leather cockade placed above the badge and attached to the shako by a clip on each side. Ø 6.7 cm. White circle on the outside, then scarlet and blue in the center. Under the cockade, a gusset for the plume, attached by a seam on the shako.
Chinstraps. On each side of the shako, there is a chinstrap, consisting of a double chamois leather strap, on which 15 iron scales are mounted, alternately cut into two or three scallops, plus a sixteenth one of circular form at the end. The first scale is 3.4 cm wide, the second slightly less, and decreasing in width up to the last one which is 1.9 cm. Each of these scales is secured by a flat iron wire. The chinstrap is fastened by a rosette, called in the 1812 regulation a "large button," made of the same metal as the chinstrap, with a diameter of 4 cm. It is stamped in the center with a five-pointed star. Each chinstrap is finished with a fabric cord.
Above the cockade, there is a scarlet woolen pompon, round in shape, with a diameter of 6.5 cm.
Interior lining made of black chamois leather.

In good condition, with wear on the leathers, plates, and fittings showing typical oxidation, the worn and damaged leather inner headband with missing parts, missing fabric lining, vintage pompon in poor condition.
HISTORY:
Formed in 1803 from the 87th infantry regiment, it took part in the battles of Ulm, Austerlitz (1805), the siege of Danzig (1807), campaigned in Spain and 1813, fought in Bautzen, Leipzig (1812), Orthez, Toulouse (1814), and Ligny in 1815.
