Sold out
PALETOT FOR FLEET CREWS, model 1858, Second Empire. 32349

In dark blue wool, straight crossed at the front and trimmed on each side with nine buttonholes with cast brass buttons depicting a navy anchor with the inscription "FLEET CREWS" (Ø 2.3 cm), each lapel trimmed with a cut-out anchor in scarlet wool. Collar and cuffs in dark blue wool. Two horizontal front side pockets. Two small uniform buttons connected by a chain and bearing the inscription "LINE CREWS" allow the two sides of the coat to be fastened together.

Sleeves with straight cuffs trimmed with two uniform buttons and topped with a double bias-cut scarlet wool braid. Inner lining in beige canvas with ink markings "H4C" (likely indicating size) and a large rectangular acceptance stamp: "1867 (year) / Gift (department) from Bt (Ship) with a navy anchor / 1TR (1st quarter)", two other stamps, one rectangular and one oval. At the bottom, a serial number "11093-2".

France.
Second Empire.
Very good condition, sleeve buttons marked "LINE CREWS."

NOTE:
This model replaced the one with buttons marked "LINE CREWS" from 1856 onwards. In this specimen, the two small chain-buttoned "LINE CREWS" buttons were found in the inner pocket of this coat. The regulation provides for the use of these buttons to connect the two sides of the coat when it is not closed, a practice confirmed by period photographs and numerous paintings, including those by Edouard Detaille in 1887 in his work on the French Army 1895-1898.
