BRAZILIAN NAVY OFFICER'S SWORD, Late 19th - Early 20th century. 32679

Gilt brass hilt. Guard with two branches forming a shell at the front decorated with a pierced branch of oak leaves and a counter-branch forming a similar but narrower counter-shell; the guard branch ends at the top in the shape of a dolphin, as does the downward-curved quillon. Cap with a short tail. Handle in wood covered with dark gray shagreen filigreed brass. Scarlet felt knot. Straight blade with hollow ridges and gutters, 68.5 cm long; it is signed at the heel on the front side "J. ANCLON / & Cie / LIEGE" and acid-etched with a warship under sail, military trophies, a fouled marine anchor surmounted by the arms of Brazil; and on the back with the same decoration with Brazil's arms replaced by a ribbon with the initials "E.U.B.". Black varnished leather scabbard with three gilt brass fittings cut into festoons on the inner edges, engraved with foliage. Chape and central fitting with a hilt ring in the shape of a braid and a gilded bronze scabbard ring. Scabbard tip with a dolphin-shaped blade tip.
