JAPANESE NAVY OFFICER'S SWORD, model 1883 produced by the Nakano Company of Tokyo, Early 20th century.
Gilt bronze hilt, with Imperial Navy inspection mark. Guard with a broad branch forming a shell decorated with lotus leaves on a sandblasted background. Folding counter-guard. Pommel with a long tail decorated with lotus leaves. Ferrule decorated with lines. Ivory shagreen-covered wooden handle with filigree brass wire. Gilt brass scalloped-edged scabbard mount. Slightly curved blade with hollowed facets and grooves near the spine, 66.5 cm long, with a gilt brass heel forming the scabbard. Chromed blade with the cutting edge decorated with a matte scalloped frieze, a variant of a traditional blade produced by the Nakano Company of Tokyo. Black shagreen-covered wooden scabbard with three gilt brass fittings decorated with lotus flowers on a sandblasted background. Gilt brass chape and central mount with gilt brass knob and belt ring. The tip of the scabbard terminates in a lyre-shaped cutthroat.
