ITALIAN NAVY OFFICER SWORD, Late 19th century. 32662
Gilt bronze hilt. Guard with a wide branch forming a shell decorated with scale-like fluting and a molded medallion of a marine anchor. Folding counter-guard. Pommel with a long tail in the shape of a crowned lion's head. Handle in wood covered with brown shagreen, filigree in brass. Slightly curved blade with hollow sides, length 78 cm, marked at the base "F. HÖRSTER / SOLINGEN", decorated on two thirds with acid-etched floral motifs, military trophies on both sides; on the front side, the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Italy (1861-1846); on the back side, a marine anchor surmounted by an eagle, emblem of the Royal Italian Navy (1861-1846). Black varnished leather scabbard with three gilt bronze fittings, richly decorated with oak leaves, plant motifs, and a marine anchor. Central fitting with stud and carrying ring. The tip of the scabbard with a lyre-shaped chape.
