Allegorical tableau containing two medals of a veteran from the 1870 war.
One on the left of the regulatory model measuring 3 cm in diameter, worn on a light green ribbon with four vertical black stripes. The other on the right, identical, but of a larger model measuring 3.5 cm in diameter.
These two medals are sewn on either side of a winged woman placed in the middle of the tableau symbolizing the French Republic, carrying laurel branches in her right hand. Above her, three flags and in one of them, a poem:
"Your folds, French flag fiercely stand out in space
They proudly wave in the wind of happiness!
Even prouder when the storm passes
They beat the recall of our ancient honor!"
To the right of the tableau:
"ALL FOR THE HOMELAND - Honor Courage Devotion. COMMEMORATIVE ENGRAVING to Mr. Baudry Pierre in Conlie, Sarthe. Veteran of 1870-71 BY THE GOLDEN BOOK OF PATRIOTIC DEVOTION. In memory of the War Medal 1870-71 which was awarded to him for his good and loyal service and for his fine conduct during the war. The director of the Golden Book J. Chaffiol. On the left, at the bottom, a navy building and below it a spahi on horseback, a cuirassier on horseback, an artilleryman, an infantryman, a colonial soldier, and a sailor.
At the bottom right, a firefighter holding a bugle in his right hand. All these military personnel and the firefighter are in their regulatory attire from the beginning of the Third Republic. In front of the bugle to the left, the ribbon of the aforementioned commemorative medal is attached, light green in color with four horizontal black stripes in the shape of a bow tie. Below the tableau and under the frame: REPRODUCTION PROHIBITED DEPOSITED BY THE GOLDEN BOOK OF PATRIOTIC DEVOTION. DIRECTOR J. CHAFFIOL - PARIS".
