OFFICER'S HUSSAR BRIDLE, First half of the 19th century. 33644
Entirely made of black polished leather, with buckles and fittings in polished white metal.
Bridle consisting of a headpiece, a leather browband decorated with five five-pointed stars. A browband adorned with a chain fixed on each side by a five-pointed star. The throatlash is "hanging" adorned with chains and bears a crescent moon with a face and star. Noseband decorated at its center with a disc with a five-pointed star in the middle, and a five-pointed star on each side. Browband and noseband connected by a headpiece composed of two leather uprights adorned with crossed chains, at the junction a large leather disk holds a flower-shaped stud.
Cavalry officer's bridle bit model 1812 of the so-called "pigeon throat" shape. The canons are almost straight from the bottom of the branches to the heels, to provide a more precise support on the bars. In the upper part, the branch forms a "banquet" with a rectangular opening called the "banquet eye." The lower part of the branch, or the bottom, ends in an inverted heart-shaped opening, commonly called "the gargoyle" (it is meant to replace the rings for reins when they are broken). The underside of the gargoyle is drilled with a hole to receive the rein rollers with their rings; the rear end of the gargoyle is drilled with a hole for attaching a chain.
Entirely made of filed wrought iron.
Black leather reins.
France.
First half of the 19th century.
