DANISH NAVY OFFICER SWORD, Mid-19th century, circa 1840. 32656
Gilt bronze hilt. Three-branched guard forming an openwork shell with curving volutes and prominent moldings, revealing an oval medallion in the center adorned with a fouled anchor, below the arsenal stamp "FREDERIKSHAVN". Cap with a long tail decorated with acanthus leaves. Handle made of wood with fluted mother-of-pearl scales fitting into the cap and bordered with brass on both sides. Decorative ferrule with grooves. Scarlet cloth knot. Slightly curved white blade with hollow grooves, ribbed back, terminating in a fish tongue, stamped at the base with the arsenal stamp "FREDERIKSHAVN" on one side, and dated "1840" on the other side. Blade length 81.6 cm. Black varnished leather scabbard with three gilt relief embellishments. Cap with a dolphin resting on a trophy of arms, including a harpoon and a trident, brass suspension loop and ring. Central fitting depicting Neptune with brass loop and ring. Scabbard tip with foliage and a lyre-shaped cut brass dart.

Good condition, hilt in very good condition, blade with slight oxidation from use, scabbard fittings retain their gilt, leather scabbard in poor condition pierced with five significant holes.
NOTE:
This sword is quite early and could possibly be a prototype foreshadowing the 1849 model.
