ARGENTINE NAVY OFFICER SWORD, Late 19th century. 32685
Brass hilt. Guard with two branches and a counter-branch forming openwork shells decorated with scrolls, foliage, Neptune's trident, a marine anchor, and a sea serpent. Quillon in the shape of a sea monster. Pommel cap with a short tail representing a bear's head. Wooden grip with bone panels and beaded brass side bars. Beaded brass ferrule. Straight flat blade with rounded back, length 73.5 cm, acid etched with boats, a marine anchor, weapons trophies, an oval coat of arms depicting a handshake on a background of a Phrygian cap topped with a radiant sun and a cartouche bearing the inscription "ARMADA ARGENTINA". Black varnished leather scabbard with three brass fittings. Chape with a marine anchor, stud, and suspension ring. Central fitting stamped with a floral motif, stud, and suspension ring. Scabbard tip stamped with foliage corollas, terminating in a brass dart cut in the shape of a lyre.

NOTE:
This model of sword was adopted at the end of the 19th century, directly influenced by the swords of the Austro-Hungarian navy with its bear head pommel found on Danube fleet swords, as well as the scabbard fittings.
