Maltese cross with four double-rayed points with enameled buttoned tips, center of the gold-laden branches bordered with white enamel, four amethyst and brown lilies flanking between the branches, oblong centers, obverse featuring at the foot a crowned and armored Saint Louis covered in a blue mantle lined with black ermines, holding in his right hand the Crown of Thorns of the Passion and in his left hand a laurel leaf crown, standing on a green ground, on a red enamel background, bordered by a royal blue rim bearing the legend "LUD. M. INS 1693," for Ludovicus Magnus Instituit 1693 (Louis the Great instituted it in 1693). The reverse features a sword passing between two laurel leaf branches forming a crown and connected by a white ribbon on a red enamel background, bordered by a royal blue rim with the legend "BELL. E VIRTUTIS. PRAEM.," for Bellicae virtutis praemium (reward for military valor), fluted ring. Ram's head hallmark (1819-1838).
