HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
Created by Pope Gregory XVI on 1/9/1831, this Order was originally intended to honor citizens of the Papal States as well as foreigners who participated in the defense of these States. There are two models that differ by the motif surmounting the cross: a military model (on the left) featuring an old-style trophy of arms and a civil model (on the right) consisting of a crown of olive branches. This Order has four classes (Knight, Commander, Commander with a breast star, and Grand Cross).
This order was awarded on a military basis to officers of the French expeditionary forces (1849 and 1869) that relieved Rome, which was occupied by the Garibaldians, as well as to officers of the Papal troops who defended the Papal States from 1830 to 1870.
