HISTORY:
Created by Pope Gregory XVI on 1/9/1831, this Order was originally intended to honor the citizens of the Papal States as well as foreigners who participated in the defense of these States. There are two distinct models differing by the motif surmounting the cross: a military model (on the left) featuring an old-style trophy of arms and a civilian model (on the right) consisting of a crown of olive branches. This Order has four classes (Knight, Commander, Commander with plaque, and Grand Cross).
This order was awarded with a military title to the officers of the French troops from the two expeditions (1849 and 1869) that liberated Rome occupied by the Garibaldians, as well as to the officers of the Papal troops who defended the Papal States from 1830 to 1870.
Rewarded merits: services to the Church, outstanding works, support for the Holy See, exemplary reputation in a community or country.
Famous recipients: Marshal Lyautey, Jean-Luc Marion, Édouard Branly, G.K. Chesterton, Roy E. Disney (nephew of Walt Disney), Bob Hope.
