ENGINEERS, 3rd Military Division, Place de Metz. SIGNED AUTOGRAPH LETTER BY DUTEIL, division general, commanding officer of the Place, TO GENERAL MARESCOT, first inspector general of the Engineers, regarding the merger of the Artillery and Engineer Schools. 25 nivôse year 11 (15 January 1803). 18910-70

Letterhead "3rd MILITARY DIVISION / PLACE DE METZ / LIBERTY / EQUALITY" with French Republic vignette.

Division General Duteil writes to General Marescot*, the first inspector general of the Engineers.
The subject of the letter is the consolidation of the Artillery and Engineer Schools. General Duteil hopes that the rules of policing and military discipline, which have been respected thus far, will continue because he has nothing but praise for the conduct of those from the former school as well as the few who have already arrived at the new one.
However, he persistently raises a point that he deems essential, that of appearance:
[...] "The officers of the School wear their hair cut in the style called 'la Titus'; And I have imposed on those of the Garrison troops the obligation to strictly conform to the provisions of article 2 title 5 of the regulation of June 24, 1792 which prescribes that they wear their hair tied in a queue and curled in a single loop [...]
Moreover, I must inform you that this body of officers is somewhat envied by those of other branches, either because of the Good Society that some frequent and others seem to shun, or because of the more careful instruction of the former, or finally, this difference in appearance; they seem to form a separate body that has absolutely no connection with the other branches [...].
Signed Duteil".
