*François Philippe de LATOUR-FOISSAC, born on July 11, 1750 in Minfeld (Germany), died on February 11, 1804 at the château d'Acqueville in Villennes-sur-Seine (Yvelines), was a divisional general of the French Revolution.
[...] On October 20, 1797, he was assigned to the army of Italy, and on March 29, 1798, he was in charge of monitoring the demarcation line with the Austrians and the construction of fortresses in Italy. In 1799, during the disastrous retreat of General Scherer, he was tasked with the defense of Mantua, where after resisting for four months against the efforts of the Austrian army, commanded by General Kray, he surrendered on July 25, 1799.
Upon returning to France, he was dismissed on December 1, 1799, by the First Consul Bonaparte, displeased to learn that a place that had cost so much blood and effort was surrendered so promptly, and ordered by a consular decree of July 24, 1800, that he be stripped of his rank and forbidden to wear any army uniform[2]. The First Consul's sentence was slightly mitigated, and he was placed on retirement in August 1801.
