* Jean Gaspard VENCE, sometimes spelled de Vence (because named as such by Louis XVI in a letter dated January 24, 1780 elevating him to the rank of knight of Saint-Louis), was born on April 6, 1747, in Marseille and died on March 12, 1808, at his château de Vaulichères (Tonnerre). A French privateer and naval officer of the 18th and early 19th centuries, he ended his career with the rank of rear admiral and became the first maritime prefect of Toulon.

- The GUILLAUME TELL was an 80-gun ship of the Tonnant class. It was laid down in 1794 and launched in Toulon in 1795 according to the plans of naval architect Jacques-Noël Sané (1740-1831). It is the fifth of the 35 ships of the Tonnant class. It had a short career in the French navy before being captured in Malta by the British in 1800 and served for 40 years in the Royal Navy.

- The ALCESTE (1780-1802), a 32-gun frigate in the French Navy. Built by the Toulon arsenal to the plans of naval engineer Coulomb, it was commissioned in April 1780, its keel was laid in May, and it was launched in October, armed in February 1781. It served in the Mediterranean squadron but was captured by the British during the Siege of Toulon (August 1793). It was evacuated (December 18-19) during the escape of the allies from the French naval base and transferred to the Navy of the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia (early 1794). It was soon recaptured by the French, by the Boudeuse (June 8, 1794), and entrusted to Lieutenant Lejoille. He captured the English brig Scout, off Cape Bon (August 4), which entered French service. It served in the squadron of Rear Admiral Martin during the Battle of Genoa (Cape Noli) on March 14, 1795. Captain Hubert took command (March 31) and participated in the capture of the ship of the line Berwick off the coast of Corsica.

** Jean-Anne Christy de la Pallière, known as "Christy-Pallière," was born on September 18, 1755, in Dinan and died in Toulon on July 28, 1829. He was a French naval officer of the 18th and 19th centuries.

- La CRÉOLE was a 40-gun frigate in the French navy, a unique design by Jacques-Augustin Lamothe. The French navy loaned it to a privateer in 1797. Later, it served in the Brest squadron, participated in Ganteaume's expeditions in 1801 in Egypt, was involved in the French acquisition of Saint-Domingue (also known as the Era of Francia) and briefly held Toussaint Louverture before being taken to France. The 74-gun ships HMS Vanguard and HMS Cumberland captured it in Saint-Domingue on June 30, 1803. The Royal Navy put it into service, but it sank shortly after an attempted voyage to Great Britain; its crew was saved.

- The ship OCEAN is a French warship, a 118-gun ship of the line, in service from 1790 to 1855. Initially named États de Bourgogne (1786-1793), then Côte d'Or (1793), Montagne (1793-1795), and Peuple (1795), it was finally renamed Océan in June 1795. Due to its long career entirely in the French navy, it sometimes gave its name to the class of identical ships (Océan class) although formally, it was named the Commerce de Marseille class, after the first ship of this type built.
