A fierce Jacobin, he joined the National Guard and became a sergeant. Promoted to captain and then lieutenant colonel, he took part in suppressing the Chouan uprising in Brittany. He then joined the Eastern Pyrenees Army under General Jean-Antoine Marbot (1754-1800) and was quickly promoted to divisional general on December 23, 1793. His division further distinguished itself when transferred to the Army of Italy in 1795, where it participated in the Battle of Loano.
