HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
The 21st Infantry Regiment Formerly Guyenne:
1790:
On July 1, 1790, the entire regiment was garrisoned in Nîmes. It faced serious disturbances that shook the city. Altercations broke out between royalists of the National Guard and the regiment. On June 13, the city was placed under martial law, and on the 15th, the regiment had to seize a tower occupied by rebels. On the 16th, the remaining royalist insurgents were besieged in the Capuchin convent. Reported to the National Assembly, it was nevertheless cleared of all charges. By the end of 1790, troubles erupted again, and the regiment was jeered and insulted by the population.
1791:
As the situation seemed serious, it was sent to Trévoux. By the end of 1791, the 2nd battalion was still in Ain. Two companies were garrisoned in Bourg, two in Montluel, two in Trévoux, and four at Fort Pierre-Châtel. This last detachment found the stay inconvenient, and on June 24, it requested to be relieved. This request was eventually denied by the department. The 21st made movements at the end of August, facing the threat of war. On September 3 and 4, three companies were in Rossillon, with two of them subsequently billeted in Belley, and the 3rd in Seyssel. It was soon joined by a 4th company from Châtillon-de-Michaille.
1792:
On January 1, the regiment was garrisoned in Lyon and Bourg-en-Bresse, with a total of 845 men and 669 missing. It was supposed to leave Lyon on March 12 to go to Besançon. The 2nd battalion was in Bourg-en-Bresse, Pierre-Châtel, and Belley in March.
On April 15, both battalions were at the Rhine army. One battalion with 694 men was garrisoned in Besançon, and the second was at Porrentruy.
