Header "RHINE ARMY Gudin Division / LIBERTY / EQUALITY".
At Hallein, on the 16th pluviôse in year 9 (5 February 1801).
J. MARULAZ, Chief of Brigade Commanding the 8th Hussar Regiment writes to General Laval, commanding the 2nd Division of the right wing to request the appointment of citizen AGNUS, captain of the said regiment, to the position of Squadron Leader.
This request was supported by General Le Courbe.
"[...] The Commander-in-Chief responded that he would reward as soon as possible the valuable qualities recognized in this officer.
The organization of cavalry troops, established by the First Consul, has set the number of squadron leaders attached to each unit at three. The Regiment currently has only two, and feels the need to acquire a senior officer who, like Captain AGNUS, possesses all the qualities necessary to fulfill this position, both from a military and administrative perspective.
I hereby express to you, General, the ardent desire that all the officers in my unit and I personally have to see him adorned with this new rank [...]
Signed: Marulaz".
