Appointment in the capacity of sergeant for citizen FLEURY COIGNET, corporal in the 3rd Battalion, due to his "audacity to leave the village of Belinstein to go alone a half league ahead in the plain to engage an enemy cavalry squadron for over two hours." "The Brigade Commander will recognize him in this capacity."

General LECOURBE, GENERAL INSPECTOR OF INFANTRY, to the Minister of War.
He reports with regret the abuses committed in the 6th Division against requisitioners and conscripts:
"The Gendarmerie arrests and imprisons one-eyed, hunchbacked, elderly men who are not even four feet tall, it arrests deserters and those who are or are not attached to any Corps as long as their physical stature and means allow them to serve. But for men as I have seen in Besançon, ... one-eyed and hunchbacked and not even four feet tall to be chained like criminals and taken to prison, I believe these are torturous means used in vain [...]
"I do not accept the Gendarmerie since it is civilians who set it in motion but these agents are very guilty because I have not found in the prisons ... only unhappy farmers dragged away from agriculture because I have not seen a single city dweller [...]
"Through an observation that I must make to you, I do not think that the government always wants to continually torment fathers torn from their families, often having no fortune except for their children and their hardships. [...]
"I have the honor to greet you with consideration."

Claude Jacques Lecourbe, born on February 22, 1759, in Besançon (Doubs), died on October 22, 1815, in Belfort (Territoire de Belfort), was a French general of the Revolution and the Empire. He was the son of an infantry officer, a knight of Saint-Louis.

Appointed divisional general on February 5, 1799, he attacked the Russian troops of Generalfeldmarschall Alexander Vassilievich Suvorov at the Devil's Bridge, in the gorges of the St. Gotthard Massif, and facilitated André Masséna's victory at Zurich on September 25 and 26, 1799. Lecourbe continued to distinguish himself prominently during the subsequent campaigns, especially displaying his talents during the Swiss campaign in 1799, which placed him among the most skilled generals of the time. Lecourbe continued to excel with the Army of the Rhine throughout the year 1800. He crushed an Austrian division at Stockach on May 3, shone brightly at Hochstadt, and led an effective pursuit after Hohenlinden until the Austrian surrender.
