SYRIAN ARAB REPUBLIC NAVAL OFFICER SWORD, Mid-20th Century (1963-1972). 32669
Gilt brass hilt. Guard with two branches forming a pierced shell at the front representing a round medallion with an inscription in the Syrian language framed by laurel branches, pierced counterguard with a laurel branch. Guard branch edged with a molding with foliage motifs. Cap with a long eagle head-shaped quillon. Handle in finely checkered black wood, filigree in brass. Ferrule decorated with foliage motifs. Natural buffalo leather knot. Slightly curved blade with grooves, length 76 cm, nickel-plated. On the front face at the ricasso, stamped "STAINLESS" along with a shield with an inscription in the Syrian language; on two-thirds, intertwined geometric decoration with cartouches bearing: inscription in the Syrian language, symbol of the army, symbol of the navy, and symbol of the air force. The reverse face similarly decorated to the front face, except for the blade heel signature here reading "WKC / SOLINGEN / GERMANY" (Weyesberg Kirschbaum & Co.).
Black varnished leather scabbard with three brass fittings decorated in relief on their outer face with intertwined geometric designs, with the central fitting showing the emblem of the Syrian Arab Republic used between 1963 and 1972.
Dark green canvas sword knot embroidered with a silver thread rod, with a gilt double coat of arms of the Syrian Arab Republic fitting.

NOTE:
This sword is extremely rare; to my knowledge and as of today, no other specimen is documented in private or public collections. This specimen is from an inter-service model adopted at the independence of Syria at the end of the French mandate.
