DANISH NAVY OFFICER'S SABER, model 1849, Late 19th - Early 20th century. 32657
Gilt bronze hilt. Two-branched guard forming an openwork shell decorated with an oval medallion depicting a marine anchor and scrollwork. Pommel forming a handle decorated with foliage. Handle hollowed out in the center on each side and decorated with mother-of-pearl plates. Ferrule adorned with lines. Slightly curved blade with grooves and hollow facets, length 79 cm, nickel-plated and acid-etched: on one side a crowned marine anchor and a rich vegetal décor, signed at the heel "Magasin du Nord", and on the other side a rich vegetal décor, signed at the heel with the logo of the German firm HÖRSTER in Solingen. Natural buffalo leather sword knot. Wooden scabbard covered with dark grey sharkskin with three gilt brass fittings decorated in relief: the chape depicting a trophy of naval weapons with a loop and ring for suspension, the central fitting representing Neptune the god of the sea, and the end of the scabbard adorned with foliate scrolls ending in a lyre-shaped cut-out dart. Gold bullion sword knot, flat cord with two scarlet stripes, tassel with thick twisted threads known as "spinach seeds".
