BIOGRAPHY:
Camille Louis Arthur de FRANCE, born on 10/8/1833 at the Rochefuret castle (near Tours) in Ballan-Miré.
Entered the Special Military School in 1851, ranked 15th out of 230. Appointed as a sub-lieutenant in 1853 in the 23rd Infantry Regiment, entered the Military School in 1854.
Ranked 18th out of 30, promoted to Lieutenant and designated to complete his infantry training at the 54th Infantry Regiment in Africa where he stayed for two years. Participated in the Kabylie expedition in 1857 where he distinguished himself in the battle of Icheriden on 24/6/1857 (wounded on the right cheek), and again on 2/8/1857. Mentioned in the army's orders, Knight of the Legion of Honor. In 1857, he completed his cavalry training with the 2nd Carabiniers.
Promoted to Captain in 1857. During the campaign in Italy, he was assigned to the General Desvaux's cavalry division of the 1st Corps of the Army which was engaged at Solferino. Received the Italian Medal, Military Valor of Savoy. Upon his return from Italy, he was appointed as an aide-de-camp to General Salignac Fénelon, successively commanding in Caen, and then the first cavalry brigade of the Guard (1862). Promoted to Captain of the first class in 1866, he was assigned to the headquarters of the Military District of Paris in 1866. In 1869, he joined the general staff of the 1st Corps of the Army.
War against Germany: Departed on campaign on July 16, 1870 with the general staff of the Army of the Rhine, he was made an Officer of the Legion of Honor on September 5 and was captured on October 28 in Metz.
Returned to France on March 14, 1871, he was placed at the disposal of General Ducrot, commanding the troops being organized in Cherbourg where he was promoted to the rank of Major on April 20, 1871. Transferred to the general staff of General Clinchant, commanding the 5th corps of the Army of Versailles on April 20, he participated in the campaign against the Paris Commune.
In September 1871, he joined the Minister of War's staff, attached to the second bureau, then as assistant secretary to the commission for the reorganization of the general staff service. In April 1874, he was sent to Austria to examine the use of railways. Awarded the Nichan Iftikar (1876).
Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1875, he became the head of the fourth bureau in 1877. Participated in the definition of studies conducted at the Special War College regarding the service of stages, railways, and transportation. He also lectured on these subjects.
Colonel in 1879, he was appointed as deputy chief of the general staff of the Ministry of War. Commander of the Order of Leopold of Austria (1881). In 1883, he was appointed as the chief of the general staff of the 1st Corps of the Army.
Brigade General in 1884.
Division General in 1889, he was appointed to the General Staff Committee (President in 1894). In 1890, he took command of the 4th Infantry Division. Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1891. Commanded the 1st Army Corps in 1893. Took part in the strikes in the North in 1893. Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1895. Member of the Superior War Council in 1896. He was injured in a horse riding accident during the army maneuvers of 1897. Army inspector in 1898.
Placed in the reserve in 1898. Deceased in 1906.
