ORIENTAL SABER KNOWN AS "PALA", Early 19th century. 32315
Silver hilt. Crossguard with double horizontal quillon engraved in its center with a stylized flower resembling a star. Grip with horn scales, carved for better handling, featuring two silver medallions and a third one at the pommel with a transversal perforation for the passage of the wrist cord. Silver lateral bar with five relief flutes. Curved flat blade made of "Wootz Persian" damascus steel (a type of Indian steel), length 81.4 cm, with an arrow approximately 10 cm long.
Black varnished leather-covered wooden scabbard with silver thread spring stitches and four silver fittings:
Cap measuring 18 cm in height, 4.8 cm in width, embossed with a grid of stylized flowers in relief. Protruding cuvette entrance decorated with a relief scallop shell. Back lateral edge cutout for the blade to pass through.
Two slightly arched belt loops measuring 2.8 cm in height, engraved with stylized star-shaped flowers, with fixed rings.
End of the scabbard measuring 29.5 cm in height, similarly decorated as the cap, with a flat silver-plated brass lyre-shaped tip.
Originally without blade back protective bar.
Early 19th century.
Very good condition, very slight blade wear, minor damage at the scabbard entrance on one side, small chip at the lateral end of the scabbard near the chape (2cm), tear without loss in the upper part of the scabbard chagrin for 4 cm.
NOTE:
High-quality saber, the handle shape resembles a bird's head. This type of weapon may have been carried by a cavalry or Mameluke officer during the First Empire.
