BIOGRAPHY:
Maurice Orange spent his youth within a family context marked by the events of the 1870 war. He quickly revealed a talent for drawing, and his early teachers encouraged him to enroll at the School of Fine Arts in Paris. A scholarship recipient in 1885, he studied under Jean-Léon Gérôme who recognized the young man's talent. He attended classes with François Flameng and struck up a friendship with Édouard Detaille. He specialized in historical painting, particularly focusing on the Napoleonic epic.
From 1887 to 1914, he exhibited at the Salon des artistes français. He received medals and travel grants. Discovering Spain, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Africa, and especially Egypt provided him with inspiration. He worked in various techniques: oil, watercolor, gouache, charcoal, pastel. He was a skilled colorist in his treatment of light.
Maurice Orange died of typhoid fever in Paris on February 28, 1916.
In addition to military inspiration and his Napoleonic works, he painted portraits, landscapes, and urban views. Sketches capturing the moment adorned his correspondence.
