BIOGRAPHY:
Maurice Orange spent his youth against the backdrop of the 1870 war in a family setting. He quickly showed a talent for drawing, and his first teachers encouraged him to enroll at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. A scholarship recipient in 1885, he studied under Jean-Léon Gérôme, who recognized the young man's talent. Orange attended classes with François Flameng and became friends with Édouard Detaille. He specialized in historical painting, particularly the Napoleonic era.
From 1887 to 1914, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, earning medals and travel grants. His inspirations came from his travels to Spain, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Africa, and notably Egypt. Orange used various techniques including oil, watercolor, gouache, charcoal, and pastel. He was known for his colorful treatment of light.
Maurice Orange died of typhoid fever in Paris on February 28, 1916. Apart from his military inspiration and Napoleonic paintings, he also depicted portraits, landscapes, and urban views. Sketches captured in the moment are evident in his correspondence.
