BIOGRAPHY:
Draner, born Jules Joseph Renard on November 12, 1833 in Liège (Belgium) and died on August 30, 1926 in Paris 9th arrondissement, was a Belgian painter, illustrator, and caricaturist.
Coming from a wealthy family, his father owned a printing press. Draner showed a talent for drawing at a very young age. He began working in a bookstore owned by his family at a young age. Later, he found employment at the Vieille Montagne Zinc Company while also contributing drawings and caricatures to local newspapers including Uylenspiegel founded by Félicien Rops. He used the reversed anagram of Renard as his artist's name. From 1852 to 1861, he produced hundreds of drawings in Conté pencil in Liège.
In 1861, he moved to Paris where he collaborated with numerous illustrated Parisian newspapers: Le Charivari, L’Éclipse, Paris-Comique, L'Illustration, Le Monde Illustré, and the Journal pour rire. Draner was instrumental in helping a compatriot, Mars, publish his first drawings in 1872. In 1879, he succeeded Cham at Le Charivari for drawing Parisian anecdotes under the pseudonym Paf. Henriot followed him. According to Guy Vandeloise: "What strikes one above all in these hundreds of illustrations that Jules Renard created for his numerous newspapers is the ease of invention, the constantly renewed fantasy that depicts everyday life through small squares of drawings."
He also designed theater costumes, particularly for the operettas of Jacques Offenbach. The Draner collection at the National Library of France consists of humorous costume drawings from Parisian theaters of the 19th century.
Specializing in military caricature, he illustrated numerous books, especially on the Siege of Paris. He is best known for his series of 136 color lithographs of caricatures of military Types militaires: Galerie militaire de toutes les nations.
He passed away on August 30, 1926 in the 9th arrondissement of Paris at the age of 92.
He bequeathed a collection of drawings to the University of Liège.
