COLONEL LOUIS GAY'S SHAKO, GRENADIER OF THE 79th INFANTRY REGIMENT, First Empire (1809-1814). 30550
Black felt body measuring 21 cm in height. Crown made of very strong waxed cow leather, with a diameter of 26 cm folded over the felt to a height of 2 cm and covered with two braids corresponding to the rank of colonel: a first gilt silver braid 1.8 cm wide topped by a second one 3 cm wide.
At the bottom of the felt, a black velvet band, 2.7 cm wide, is sewn. Rounded leather visor made of strong varnished cow leather sewn on the front of the shako, imprinted with a laurel leaf wreath on its edges, 7 cm wide.
Embossed gilt brass plate (or badge) affixed on the front, with polished protruding parts in agate stone, depicting a crowned imperial eagle grasping Jupiter's thunderbolt placed on a shield-shaped base with the number "79" attached to the plate (the numbers are gilt brass over a checkered background), bordered at the bottom by an oak branch and laurel branch; the sides of the shield are adorned with flaming bombs, H 13.3 cm, width 12 cm.
Cockade made of silver and scarlet silk and dark blue braid placed above the plate and sewn to the shako. Ø 6.5 cm. Outer circle in silver, then scarlet and blue in the center.
The chinstraps are made up of two leather straps each held to the shako by a rosette. Soft leather chinstraps covered with black velvet and adorned with 15 scalloped gilt brass pieces, plus a rounded sixteenth one at its end. They are finished with silk ribbons. The first scallop is 3.4 cm wide, the last one is 2 cm wide. Length of each chinstrap with rosette 22.5 cm.
Rosettes, also known as "large buttons," round shaped, made of embossed gilt brass with a flame bomb in the center on a sanded background, bordered by a raised molding. Ø 54 cm.
Crimson spherical pompom, Ø 6.5 cm.
Interior leather lining with seven wolf teeth-shaped pieces made of black varnished calf, crowned by an ivory paper lining. The inside of the crown bears a square label printed in black "At the Golden Crown. / Gaudon Gandoin, / Manufacturer of Gilding and / Trimmings, / Supplier of Troops, / Rue Grand-Pont, n°.26, / In Rouen.".

BIOGRAPHY:
GAY Louis (1772-1838). Captain in the 1st battalion of Mont-Blanc, incorporated on 26 Germinal II in the 5th provisional half-brigade which later becomes the 18th line infantry regiment. He participated in campaigns from 1793 to Year III in the Eastern Pyrenees army, from Years IV to VI in Italy and Switzerland, and served from Year VII to Year IX in Egypt and Syria, where he was shot in the right leg. Major on 11 Prairial IX.
Appointed major in the 35th line infantry regiment on 11 Brumaire XII, then a member of the Legion of Honor on 4 Germinal following. Served in Holland for Years XII, XIII, and XIV, and in Italy from 1806 to 1809. Louis Gay, colonel on March 31, 1809, and knight of the Empire with endowment on August 15. He took command of the 79th line regiment on September 24, 1809. Served in the army of Spain from 1811 to 1814. Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1813. Brigadier General and baron of the Empire in 1814. Louis XVIII made him a knight of Saint-Louis on August 20 of the same year and put him on non-active duty. Employed in the organization of the national guards of the 7th military division in 1815, he then moved to the Army of the Alps before being placed back on non-active duty. Retired in 1825.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT:
Formed during the Revolution from the Boulonnois regiment, the 79th line infantry regiment engaged in the Army of Italy (1797) and occupied the island of Corfu (1798-1799). On 18 Brumaire 1799, the 79th took part in Napoleon's coup d'état by entering the Council of Five Hundred. It served in the West army from 1800 to 1802, then in Saint-Domingue (1802-1803), back in the Army of Italy (1805) and of Naples, in the Dalmatian army (1806-1809), in Spain (1810-1814). In 1813, the 4th battalion of the 79th regiment participated in the campaign in Germany. The regiment was disbanded in 1815.
