Prisoners of war. REPORT OF MILITARY OFFICERS TO THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTORY CONCERNING CAPTAIN BEDOUT, WHO COMMANDED THE SHIP LE TIGRE, UPON HIS RETURN FROM ENGLISH PRISONS where he was held captive, 20 Brumaire Year 4 (11 November 1795). 18915-12

Captain Jacques Bedout was captured by the British in the Battle of Groix on 23 June 1795 (5 Messidor Year 3).
Upon his return from British prisons, the Committee, based on the report from the naval commissioner, decided that this captain would be promoted from the 3rd class to the first, this promotion being the reward for his military conduct:

"He has already informed the Committee on 28 Fructidor of the courage and intrepidity of this officer; 300 men killed, 150 wounded, 8 feet of water in the hold, all maneuvers in disarray, Bedout covered in wounds, alone on his deck, and unconscious, it was in this state that the Tiger surrendered to five British ships that had been fighting it for a long time. [...]
But the enormous losses caused by his capture, his effects, his provisions, everything passed into the hands of the Enemy, he only brings back from England his zeal and his courage [...]"

Some effects will be given to him, which will not cover all those he lost:
"A saber, a sword, a pair of pistols, a silversmith's sextant, a Dollond telescope for day and night, and an extraordinary gratification of eighteen thousand pounds which might, by indemnifying him, put him in a position to take on another command [...]

"Approved by the Executive Directory the gift of the instruments and the gratification above." Signed L.M. Revellière-Lepeaux **; Reubell *** president; Carnot ****

Dimensions: 31 cm x 20.5 cm. Good condition, fold marks, foxing.
