Army of Italy. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED SCHÉRER, * GENERAL IN CHIEF OF THE ARMY OF ITALY ADDRESSED TO THE MINISTER OF WAR AUBERT DUBAYES **, Finale 25 frimaire year 4 (16 December 1795). 18915-6

Printed heading "ARMÉE D'ITALIE / LIBERTÉ / ÉGALITÉ" with a vignette of the Republic holding a pike with the Phrygian cap and a bundle of arms.
"At the headquarters of Finale on 25 frimaire of the fourth year of the French Republic, one and indivisible".

Interesting letter in which the general in chief of the Army of Italy Schérer responds to the Minister of War Aubert Dubayet, who had requested in a letter dated 9 frimaire his opinion on the morality and capability of certain divisional generals (Fontbonne, Kilmaine, Stengel) and brigade generals (Serviez and Guillaume), as well as on the adjutant generals Baude and Lentherie.

... General Fontbonne... "entrusted with several tasks which he carries out with precision... his patriotism is animated by the best spirit..."
... Divisional General Killemaine... "since I have been commanding the army of Italy, he has been continuously ill, and he still is... I have not been able to judge his morality and military talents..."
... Divisional General Stengel. The description of his behavior leads him to say "that does not indicate a well-established patriotism..."
... Brigade General Serviez... "I do not particularly see the military talents of this general, but I have noticed that he is involved in many intrigues..."
... Brigade General Guillaume... "he does not possess great military talents, but he is brave, and I have always recognized in him the sentiments of a true patriot..."
... Adjutant General Baude... "under the pretext of illness, he left Perpignan to go home, leaving the column to which he was attached... unworthy conduct of a brave soldier... bad opinion of his bravery and morality..."
... Adjutant General Lutherie... "as he was already among the adjutant generals abolished when I arrived at the Army of the Pyrenees, I did not know him and therefore cannot judge his morality and capability."
"Signed: Greetings and fraternity Scherer."
