Brigadier Commission of the 2nd Division of the National Gendarmerie, in the Department of Aube at the residence of Brienne for citizen Paul Simon LEMERLE.
Red wax seal "MUNICIPALITY OF BRIENNE".
Citizen Paul Simon LEMERLE is appointed Brigadier in the 26th Division of the Gendarmerie; he must swear an oath and this document will be given to him. Done on the 3 nivôse of the second year.
Signed "THE PROVISIONAL EXECUTIVE COUNCIL GOHIER".
Two handwritten notes in the margin:
_ "Registered in Brienne by me, secretary clerk of the Municipality of Brienne, undersigned on the eighteenth ventôse of the third year of the French and indivisible Republic." Signed CROISEL.
Round stamp in red greasy ink "IN THE NAME OF THE FRENCH REPUBLIC".
_ "Registered by us Clerk of the Grie (clerk's office) Nle of the Department of Aube residing in (?) undersigned on the register (...) page 74 and following; (?) on the 26th ventôse 3rd year of the republican era." Signed MARON.

"March 4, 1792 Brigadier Commission of Brienne. Renewed by the executive power on January 18, 1794".
Poor condition, fold lines with tears (one fold repaired with tape), tears with missing parts on the edges of the document (outside the text), black ink stain on the back, damp stains and foxing.
