Letter with heading "ARMY OF THE MOSELLE / In front of Luxembourg" "LIBERTY / EQUALITY", beautiful vignette "DEATH TO TYRANTS PEACE TO THE PEOPLE / FRENCH REPUBLIC INDIVISIBLE AND DEMOCRATIC". Numbered document "No. 135".
With address and red wax seal. "Military Service" "To citizen General Ambert commander in chief of the army in front of Luxembourg at his headquarters in Gal at (?)".
At the Headquarters in Couteron on the 27th Pluviôse of the 3rd year of the French Republic, indivisible and democratic.
Major General Taponnier writes to General Ambert to inform him "that there is nothing new" but that a "deserter on foot from the Benden regiment has arrived with his equipment." This deserter provides some information:
"He says they have little fodder and wood, that the inhabitants would like to surrender but the General does not want to; that they only get news with difficulty...
General Taponnier requests the provision of equipment:
"I renew my request for shoes from you ... Many soldiers no longer have any, but they lose them every day as they return from the outposts, to cross the lands where men sink up to half their leg."

Fair condition, text in good condition, fold marks, tears on page 4 at the wax seal (without loss) and above the address with some loss (does not affect the text).
* * Alexandre-Camille Taponier, born on February 2, 1749 in Valence (Drôme) and died on April 15, 1831 in Paris, was a major general of the French Revolution who particularly distinguished himself during the wars of the first coalition, at the battles of Wissembourg on October 13, 1793, and Kaiserslautern from November 28 to 30, 1793.
