HELMET AND CUIRASS SET OF THE IMPERIAL GUARD CUIRASSIERS, model 1854, Second Empire. Inventory number 33445.
HELMET with steel shell, visor, and neck guard with brass fittings. Shell marked "DELACHAUSSÉE", stamped "1022", dated "72" (1872). Visor and neck guard with brass trim folded over their outer edges, visor lined with black waxed calfskin and neck guard lined with green waxed calfskin. Frontal band embossed in relief with a crowned letter "N" resting on two laurel branches. Crest (H 10.5 cm) composed of two fins stamped with a series of ten decreasing panels towards the rear, bordered at the top with laurel leaves; and a crest ornament (width 4.1 cm) embossed in relief at the top with a head of Medusa. Brass crest ornament adorned with scarlet horsehair. Black horsehair mane with a braided center braid, approximately 90 cm long. Chin straps in black leather covered with interlaced rings, with rosettes embossed with laurel leaves (Ø 5.3 cm); each rosette is attached to the shell with a brass screw.
Round-section brass plume holder, tapering downwards and molded with laurel leaves.
Inner leather lining cut into ten finger-like sections.
Good condition, posterior mane, the "N" and the crown were hammered in 1872 and reshaped later.
CUIRASS of steel composed of a backplate and breastplate. Breastplate stamped on the outer edge "324" then "550", bordered by 21 brass rivets with a large brass hook for the saber strap and a second one for the aiguillettes, interior marking difficult to read.
Backplate similarly stamped to the breastplate, bordered by 39 brass rivets, trimmed at the top with two leather straps covered with interlaced figure-eight chain mail in brass with a steel lock finished with leather toggles, and at the bottom with a black polished leather belt. Interior marking "Manuf Imple Coulaux 1856 2T 1L N° 1760".
