HELMET AND CUIRASS SET OF THE IMPERIAL GUARD CUIRASSIERS, model 1854, Second Empire. 33445
The HELMET features a steel shell with brass fittings, visor, and neck guard. The shell is marked "DELACHAUSSÉE," numbered "1022," and dated "72" (1872). The visor and neck guard are edged with folded brass rims, with the visor lined in black waxed leather and the neck guard lined in green waxed leather. The front band is embossed with a raised "N" crown resting on two laurel branches. The crest (H 10.5 cm) consists of two fins embossed with a series of ten decreasing panels towards the back, bordered at the top with laurel leaves, and a mask (width 4.1 cm) embossed in relief with a medusa head at the top. Brass crest ornament adorned with scarlet horsehair. Black horsehair mane with a braided center plait, approximately 90 cm in length. Chin strap with black leather straps covered in interlocking rings, with laurel leaf embossed rosettes (Ø 5.3 cm); each rosette is attached to the shell with a brass screw.
Round-section brass plume holder, tapering downwards and molded with laurel leaves.
Interior lining in black leather cut into ten lobes.
In good condition, the rear hair plume, the "N," and the crown were hammered in 1872 and subsequently reshaped.
The CUIRASS is made of steel, consisting of a backplate and breastplate. The breastplate is numbered on the outer edge "324" and then "550," bordered by 21 brass rivets, with a difficult-to-read interior stamp.
The backplate is similarly numbered to match the breastplate, bordered by 39 brass rivets, embellished at the top with two leather straps covered with interlocking figure-eight chain mail in brass with a steel lock terminated by leather straps, and at the bottom with a black varnished leather belt. Inner stamp "Manuf Imple Coulaux 1856 2T 1L N° 1760."
